Hmm, obviously Doc Brown missed the fact that the TARDIS doesn't always materialise conveniently around obstacles, but simply falls from the sky from time to time, or flies over motorways with great uproar to rescue nutty brides.
Maybe Doc Brown wanted to whip into the...er... 'space in time' before the TARDIS got there!
What can an old police box (the compact car of time & space machines) do about that? Well since the TARDIS has more going on than a 'simple' nuclear-equipped 1980s car, the TARDIS wins out over the DeLorean. (As well as having more legroom too!)
